Nobody but web-pirates and perhaps print-on-demand publishers are making a buck on this rodeo. Thank you for clearing this up for me. I'm not familiar with Hal Robins' art but personally I'd prefer his replaced covers. If only because the one for The Perfect Host reminds me of the creepy Americana comic album The Man from Nowhere written by the French author Ted Benoit and drawn by Pierre Nedjar.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8525415828746712027.post-66092430384383781182019-01-20T18:02:18.428-05:002019-01-20T18:02:18.428-05:00George--I, too, made the effort to pick up each St...George--I, too, made the effort to pick up each Sturgeon Project volume as they came out, even in lean times, and was very happy to both read the ARGYLL pamphlet and purchase it to hep provide the seed money...a pity, I think, its contents weren't incorporated into one of the subsequent volumes. It does help to explain certain aspects of Sturgeon's personality. (This also means I have the two ugly replaced-cover jacket versions of the books...better for collecting, I suppose, but both replacements are improvements, even if THE PERFECT HOST replacement cover isn't that artist's best work, either.)

Mike--thanks, though you are too kind...the LOCUS/Contento and ISFDB indices were only slightly gone over by me to add details and correct one typo, as I recall...and if I haven't been so exhausted this week, the post would already have my comments on each volume. And my recollections of some of the stories have faded, and I should re-read, a pretty big Sturgeon Project in itself, if rarely a painful one. Glad I provided you with any bits you hadn't come across previously. I picked up the COMPLETE STORIES--9 in hardcover, 4 in paperback (unintentionally)--about 3 1/2 years ago, and have read the introductions but not (yet) all the stories. (My first encounter with Sturgeon was via the TV show reprint of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, and I liked it quite a bit, though in retrospect, as you say, it doesn't measure up to his better fiction.) There's much here I didn't know, including the bit about Betty Ballantine's contribution to I, LIBERTINE.
