  1. Todd, I used to listen to The Who and Bangles both of whom were considered hip in the 70s & 80s. Looking back, I don't know why Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Manic Monday" were so popular in India. They are nice songs.

Well, in part because they are good songs, and in part because that was the album CBS chose to push hard around the world ("Manic Monday" being written by Prince [Rogers Nelson] just after his commercial breakthrough with PURPLE RAIN was a convenient hook, and CBS also owed the Bangles a favor--the CBS-TV series CHARLES IN CHARGE featured as its first theme song a lyrically dumbed-down but otherwise blatant plagiarism of their song "Dover Beach"--somebody had clearly been listening to the band's first, largely unsupported CBS album, the brilliant ALL OVER THE PLACE). But the Bangles did better work before and after their brief period as CBS show ponies.
