The Dave Brubeck Quartet: "Blue Rondo a la Turk"
The Gil Evans Orchestra featuring Miles Davis: "It Ain't Necessarily So"
The Modern Jazz Quartet: "Django"
The Charles Mingus Band: "Haitian Fight Song"
The John Coltrane Quartet: "Afro-Blue"
The Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet: "Blues March"
The Gerry Mulligan Tentette: "Walking Shoes"
The Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band: "Kogun" (at 19:34)
The Oliver Nelson Septet: "Stolen Moments"
The Chico Hamilton Quartet featuring Eric Dolphy: "In a Sentimental Mood"
The Jimmy Giuffre Trio: "Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West"
And the alternate that might well be the better choice here, "The Train and the River"
Paul Bley: "Ida Lupino"
The George Russell Smalltet (featuring Bill Evans, aka the Kid): "Concerto for Billy the Kid"
The Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra: "Cubano Be/Cubano Bop"
Randy Weston Band: "Niger Mambo"
Thelonious Monk: "'Round Midnight"
The Max Roach Quintet: "Blues Waltz"
David Amram Band (featuring Harold Land and Carmel Jones): "Slightly Manchurian Blues" (The Manchurian Candidate soundtrack)
Lambert, Hendricks and Ross: "Midnight Indigo"
Duke Ellington, Max Roach, Charles Mingus: "Caravan"

The david Amaram track was very cool, indeed.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Remarkable how one can agonize over a list like this, beyond the absolutely obvious..."Pull My Daisy" for Amram, or a track from his most widely-heard (probably still) and probably most influential soundtrack recording? "My Funny Valentine" for the Mulligan/Baker quartet? The Jimmy Giuffre Trio should probably be up with "The Train and the River"....
