If there was a true flaw to these retrospective albums, it was in slighting their female artists in favor of the male.  

My mother, who remembered seeing a very young Aretha Franklin open for Joe Turner, had Turner's first Atlantic LP (I have it here somewhere; R&B scholar and psychology professor Lynn McCutcheon showed me how to get the small drop of nail polish off the LP disc safely in 1985). TM
